We planted 1,000 trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses in the Sanctuary. It was a great effort and the children loved being out in the bush exploring and planting.

Biodiversity Bus Tour (Geelong Landcare Network)

25 people from all seven landcare groups in the Geelong Landcare Network gathered in Inverleigh to visit five of over 40 properties to have received support from the Biodiversity Grant.

A significant area was cleared of boneseed to make way for natural regeneration of any one of the 84 indigenous plants recorded by Mark Trengove Ecological Services.

Treats and Feats – Birds n’ Boneseed

With the sun shining and 40 volunteers helping to plant approximately 1,100 trees, shrubs, ground covers and grasses, this was another successful day.

This was a very successful day with 44 Covenant College students participating. Three staff assisted along with members of the BFS Landcare Group.
After a very enjoyable BBQ provided by BFS Landcare Group and organised by Lit and George Belcher (the custodians), the students planted approximately 200 shrubs and some ground covers and grasses.

Families were invited into the Sanctuary to spend the morning surrounded by bird life in the fresh air and sunshine helping us with one of our major tasks, pulling the boneseed weed.

Local families and those from further afield plant over 800 trees in the Sanctuary and then shared a delicious lunch provided by the custodians and BFS Landcare, who also provided take home seedlings of local indigenous plants.

A morning of hard work for young and old involved pulling the boneseed weed, creating piles for bonfires of weeds and excess fuel, followed by a barbecue provided by the custodians and BFS Landcare, with Carlos Thornton strumming the banjo.

A guided tour was conducted by botanist Maxine Edgar to discover the special flora in the Sanctuary and learn how to identify plants.
This was followed by a delicious afternoon tea provided by Food Skil and the Rosewall Neighbourhood Centre.
Open Day

The Sanctuary opened up for a BYO picnic lunch and guided walks which highlighted the flora and fauna to be found there. Information packs about the area were distributed.

Recently covenanted with Trust for Nature, the Sanctuary Launch marked the change of name from Lilydale Sanctuary to its new name, the Dog Rocks Flora and Fauna Sanctuary.

Working with members of Batesford-Fyansford-Stonehaven Landcare Group, students from Covenant College, Geelong, together with their teachers, John Rees and Stephen Demetriou, learned to identify 8 species of Acacia in the Sanctuary.

We planted 1,100 large shrubs, medium shrubs and ground covers, and 560 Danthonia (Wallaby Grass).
All seeds and cuttings were collected from Dog Rocks Flora & Fauna Sanctuary and propagated at Barwon Water Nursery by the Batesford-Fyansford-Stonehaven Landcare Group, National Green Jobs Corp (Stuart Quick) and Covenant College (John Rees and Steve Demetriou).
